A looooonng time.
At 45, I have witnessed the advent of inside malls, to the slow death of inside malls. Back in the mid 80's, malls were were it was happening. We would make special trips to the Galleria in Birmingham or Lennox Mall in Atlanta. They were packed back then.
No more. A few months ago, we went to the Galleria in Bham and whole wings were shut down. The place to shop is The Summit now, an "Outdoor Lifestyle Center", as they are called. University Mall (THE place to hang out in the mid 80's, before Cordova was expanded) is being knocked down next year and turned into just such a place.
The reason I am writing about this is that it made me think about how much change can take place in a 25 year period. I wonder what things are so popular now, that 25 years from now will be on the verge of extinction. Newspapers? Radio? Who knows. I guess we will have to just wait and see...
If you have 5 minutes to waste, click here to get a real "blast from the past" and see some of the dead malls around the US. University Mall has not been added yet, but should be.
